Wesley Willis…..

Wesley Willis, to me, has always been a freak show. A large, black , schizophrenic man talking over pre-programed jingles from a key board to the delight of a parasitical audience. I had written him off as a standard inner-city bum. That was however, until today when I discovered he was an artist too…

The first thing that strikes me about the above image are the lines and the second is the composition. The lines are deliberate and considered. The composition is slightly warped but offers a unique and imaginative perspective. There is a value that lies in his work, that most aspiring artist strive for. Where many young artist fain naivety, Willis has had ignorance forced upon him through mental illness. But it is with sadness that I use the word “ignorance” as that is what is required if I’m to stick with the accepted rhetoric of modern art critique. Unnecessary distinctions based on education and economics are cynically drawn to distinguish between artist practices. This results in the cultic value of his artwork being sadly proliferated by an aura formed from his mental illness which consequently has become a novel and marketable attribute.

Finally a decent edit from the UK. These guys have actually tried to do something original. The music and filming is edited well together It’s refreshing to see some experimentation with angels, it makes a change from shitty dolly shots and cheesy faux burning film transitions.

Kickback growing older, colder, stronger.

Kickback are french hardcore band from Paris who take their ideological influences from people like Marquis de Sade, Octave Mirabeau, Gaspar Noe, Nero and various nihilistic sexual perverts throughout history. Whilst many hardcore bands put out a political messages with a seething rage but essentially for change and betterment of the world especially the anarcho bands. Kickback’s rage is against humanity as a whole and shoves in your face a manifesto of sexual violence, deprivation, drug use, seedy Thai brothels and criminal hedonism. Live this band is very violent and the front man is more than likely to attack you, they even one time during a notorious live show in Paris had pre-op transexual sex workers parade their penises. This band represents all that is ugly about our world, we shouldn’t look but there is something about their ability to revel in being a group of seriously fucked up people that is attractive and keeps us coming back for more.
