B – Movie and an on going obsession with new wave/synth pop music….

I have for a long time now had a keen interest in post punk/new wave/synth pop music, or what ever the hell you call it. Im not sure if it started with and was fueled by strong feelings of 80’s nostalgia. What ever it was, receiving a Talk Talk album (The Collection) and a Joy Division album (1977-1980 ) from friends on my 18th birthday definitely was a turning point. A big part of the obsession for me is the discovery of a new band or song. For example, today I discovered this gem:

Another good example of this is when I discovered Vicious Pink whilst listening to Last FM.

There has been occasions when I’ve stumbled across new music in a more traditional way, like when I went into Soul Jazz records and they where playing The Units – probably my happiest and luckiest find seeing as they don’t even stock their music! Or when I was in New York in some crappy clothes shop and they where playing New Order, only I didn’t recognise them because they where playing the only song that Peter Hook sings the lead vocals on.

Obsession may be too strong a word to describe my interest, but it has developed beyond a passive bedroom bound interest. During my second year of University I was fortunate enough to DJ at an 80’s night with a friend. This led onto me and said friend putting on a number of nights. I think the main aim was to find people who liked the same music as us or who hopefully felt as passionate as we did. The reality was very different and what I came to realise that like skating, it’s not always enough to be into the same activity or music as someone and assume you’ll get along. (pretty obvious I know, but that doesn’t matter) In hindsight I feel those days where bitter sweet and I’m glad they’re behind me and it seems my obsession has come full circle, back into the bedroom where for now it belongs. Anyways, I hate reminiscent ramblings (unless they’re mine, because I’m thoughtful enough to include music with them), and Im sure everyone has songs and bands that make them weep or feel part of a gang, or reminds them of an estranged lover or some crap like that.
